Jaw-Dropping 1,000-Year-Old Medieval Castle with 100 Rooms for Sale in Provence, France (2026)

Imagine uncovering a breathtaking medieval castle that has stood the test of time for nearly a millennium; it might sound like a fairy tale, but it’s very much a reality. Recently, the magnificent Le Château de la Verdière in the picturesque region of Provence, France was listed for sale at a staggering price that few can afford. Yet, it is the castle's rich history spanning almost 1,000 years that piques the interest of many.

This stunning property is not just any castle; it boasts 100 rooms, along with charming courtyards, expansive terraces, flourishing olive groves, and even a helipad, making it a truly unique offering on the market.

Among its numerous rooms, you’ll find elegant salons, reception areas, vaulted chambers dating back to the medieval era, and even a Romanesque church from the 13th century. In total, this impressive estate encompasses approximately 53,820 square feet of living space, set on nearly 40 acres of land.

According to Alain Lebreton, the owner of Provence Verte Sotheby’s International Realty, the property underwent a meticulous restoration process between 2003 and 2010. This effort aimed to revive elements from the 18th century, such as the exquisite gypseries that are native to the region.

Gypseries are essentially ornamental plasterwork crafted from gypsum. Once heated and ground, it transforms into a fine powder that, when mixed with water, hardens in the air, similar to stucco. "The term and technique are almost exclusively associated with Provence," Lebreton explains. These decorative plaster details were prevalent from the Middle Ages until the French Revolution, often adorning fireplace mantels, homes, châteaux, and townhouses, as well as being used for intricate partitions or ceiling designs.

Historically, Le Château de la Verdière served as a formidable military fortress in the 10th century, strategically positioned to oversee the essential road connecting Arles to Castellane. The castle saw significant enhancements over the centuries; notably, a tower was added in the 13th century, and between 1437 and 1613, the château expanded further. However, much of the present-day appearance and interior décor reflect the style and design choices made during the 18th century.

Lebreton points out that remarkably, many of these original features have been preserved in excellent condition. He emphasizes that the castle is now poised for a new owner who can appreciate its incredible potential and charm.

"The estate offers complete privacy and tranquility, yet Saint-Tropez is just a ten-minute helicopter ride away, and Paris is conveniently accessible within three hours by TGV from Aix-en-Provence,” he adds, highlighting its appealing location.

However, potential buyers should brace themselves, as the asking price for this extraordinary property stands at 15 million euros, equivalent to about $17.7 million in U.S. dollars. For those questioning the valuation, Lebreton confidently describes the estate as an "exceptional rarity."

"Few châteaux in southern France match the grandeur and quality of La Verdière," he asserts. "It truly is one of a kind."

The castle features historic salons, reception rooms, and vaulted medieval spaces, all reflecting its long and fascinating architectural journey. Notably, the allure of Provence attracts many celebrities, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and George Lucas, who own properties in this renowned region celebrated for its stunning lavender fields and award-winning vineyards.

Lebreton also notes that some areas of the château remain unexplored, presenting an exciting opportunity for a new owner to create luxurious amenities like a spa or wellness center.

"This isn’t merely a residence; it’s a canvas for your imagination—an oasis where elegance, history, and the natural beauty of Provence come together to form something truly special,” he concludes.
