Henri Grandjean, a brand that embodies the essence of horological artistry, is here to remind aficionados that some names truly retain their enchanting allure. This comeback introduces a remarkable innovation – a mechanical marvel that elevates the tourbillon into entirely new dimensions. Say hello to the Henri Grandjean Magician, an enchanting and enigmatic triple-axis tourbillon that appears to hover effortlessly in mid-air, seemingly detached from the watch's mechanism.
Henri Grandjean (1803-1879) was a renowned Swiss watchmaker hailing from Le Locle, celebrated for his exceptional chronometers and intricate pocket watches. His contributions were pivotal in the evolution of marine chronometry, and he played a significant role in establishing the Neuchâtel Observatory as a leading institution in precision timekeeping. Today, watches crafted by him are housed in prestigious collections, including the Musée d’Horlogerie du Locle, MIH, and the Patek Philippe Museum. The legacy of his complex timepieces continues to captivate collectors, with certain models commanding six-figure prices at auctions. The revival of his name seeks to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern excellence, ensuring that his extraordinary heritage endures.
Mechanical Sorcery
The inaugural timepiece of this brand revival is aptly named the Magician, drawing inspiration from one of its historical predecessors. True to its name, it brings a captivating twist. The mesmerizing triple-axis tourbillon seems to levitate, with no visible means of support from the watch's inner workings. While a magician typically keeps their secrets hidden, we’re here to unveil a fascinating detail.
The captivating illusion is achieved through two overlaid transparent discs that drive the tourbillon's movement, which in turn regulates the entire mechanism. One disc transmits motion from the gear train, while the other features fixed gearing. This stationary gear interacts with a pinion on the rotating tourbillon cage, setting it in motion. As the cage rotates, it rolls seamlessly along the stationary gear, meticulously controlling its rotational speed.
Abracadabra, fast axes in motion
With the tourbillon cage appearing to float magically, observers can appreciate its intricate motion in ways never before seen. The complexity of a tourbillon’s movement is presented with striking clarity and impact.
The triple-axis tourbillon revolves around three distinct axes, creating a continuous, intricate three-dimensional motion. Watching these cages rotate at varying speeds is nothing short of mesmerizing, as each component operates in a precisely coordinated dance. Adding to the spectacle is the rapid rotation of the cages, taking place at intervals of 10, 18, and 60 seconds across the different axes.
Keeping it light
Achieving such swift rotations within the triple-axis tourbillon is a remarkable engineering feat that relies on sophisticated micro-engineering techniques. Additionally, the weight of a three-dimensional tourbillon is crucial for its functionality, necessitating the use of advanced lightweight materials to ensure smooth and precise operation. In a rare move for watchmaking, magnesium is used in crafting the first cage and the balance bridge, providing strength without unnecessary weight, although working with magnesium presents unique challenges. The escapement bridge and the second cage are made from titanium, while the outer cage is constructed from a combination of titanium and steel to achieve perfect balance.
Calibre 1831
Inside the Magician ticks the hand-wound calibre 1831, developed and manufactured in-house at the brand's facility in Noiraigue, located in the Val de Travers region near Neuchâtel. Utilizing various CNC machines, they manufacture most components in-house, with exceptions like the hairspring, barrel spring, and jewels.
This expansive 17-line movement is plated in rose gold and showcases fine traditional decorations, including Geneva stripes. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, it houses two barrels that provide approximately 40 hours of power reserve.
The design of the movement prominently features the tourbillon, while the hours and minutes display is positioned off-center at the 3 o'clock mark. The dial is complemented by a date indication set concentrically within a black onyx ring, along with a day-night indicator located between the 11 and 12 o’clock positions. The date is indicated by a white index placed on one of the spokes of the 31-tooth date wheel.
The Henri Grandjean Magician is encased in a bold 45mm x 16mm rose gold housing. It is available in six variations, two of which we had the opportunity to photograph – one being ornately decorated with floral engravings reminiscent of Fleurisanne designs typical in Val-de-Travers.
Secured to the wrist by an alligator leather strap, the watch fastens with a folding buckle. Pricing for the watch starts at CHF 350,000 for the titanium version, CHF 380,000 for the plain gold variant, and CHF 480,000 for the engraved gold model.
