The idea of charging a toll for a new Auckland Harbour crossing has sparked debate, with concerns that the proposed $9 toll might not even cover the project's costs. But here's where it gets controversial... The Infrastructure Commission suggests a toll as high as $9 to help pay for a second crossing, but the editor of an advocacy website, Matt Lowrie, argues that this might not be enough. The estimated revenue from the toll is between $7 and $9 billion, while the projected costs of the crossing could exceed $20 billion. This means that even if the toll is implemented, it might not be sufficient to cover the long-term expenses. And this is the part most people miss... When the Harbour Bridge was first opened in 1959, motorists had to pay 2 shillings and 6 pence, which is equivalent to around $9 in 2025. Tolls were removed in 1984, and Lowrie suggests that other payment options should be considered for the new crossing. He also points out that tolling both crossings might not be necessary, as the new one could simply be underutilized. This would result in a "multi-billion dollar piece of infrastructure... sitting unused". Lowrie proposes a lower toll to test the impact, and he also mentions that the Northern Busway in 2008 delayed the need for a new harbour crossing due to increased commuter uptake. Whether a toll is introduced or not, Aucklanders will likely end up paying the bulk of the cost through road taxes or fuel taxes. However, the majority of the funding will come from Crown investment, which must be balanced against the need for improvements to hospitals and schools. The Transport Minister, Chris Bishop, acknowledges the significant decision of whether to toll the existing bridge as well.
